BalletX today announced a transformative $7.4 million bequest from renowned international scholar of 17th and 18th century literature, Dr. Joan DeJean, who passed away in December of 2023. Dr. DeJean was a driving force of the feminist literary movement, an author, and a distinguished professor of Romance Languages at Yale University, Princeton University, and University of Pennsylvania. This historic gift marks the largest donation that BalletX has ever received since its founding in 2005.
Joan DeJean believed in the power of the arts to inspire change and strengthen communities. Her gift is a testament to her unwavering support of BalletX’s mission, and it ignites new possibilities for the company’s future. In honor of her remarkable generosity, BalletX establishes the Joan DeJean Innovation Fund, and dedicates its 2024-2025 Season to her memory and beautiful spirit.
Reflecting on the significance of Joan DeJean’s legacy, Artistic & Executive Director Christine Cox remarks, “Joan’s transformative gift gives BalletX the robust foundation we need to grow as a global force in contemporary ballet. Thanks to Joan, we can take significant steps towards our brightest future and invest more deeply in the artists—including dancers, choreographers, composers, musicians, and production designers—who will elevate our endeavors to unprecedented heights.”
Cox continues, “Joan was a dear friend of the company, and she loved watching the creative process and sharing in the joy of live performance. She was inspired by BalletX’s vision, and saw that our passion for artists and creativity drives our global commitment to innovation in ballet. Joan trusted us with her legacy, and we want to honor her belief in the company by securing our future and ensuring her remarkable gift lasts for years to come.”
BalletX Board Chair Jan P. Boswinkel says, “Joan DeJean’s bequest is a true testament to BalletX and Christine Cox’s mission to expand contemporary ballet for all audiences. In what is often a challenging environment for the arts, we are honored to steward Joan’s legacy, propelling BalletX’s strategic vision forward. We will continue our robust work to secure the company’s future through our philanthropic partnerships, and we hope that Joan’s gift inspires others to be a part of this remarkable journey.”
This historic bequest is an example of the profound impact that legacy planned giving can have on an organization like BalletX. Legacy contributions like Joan’s provide pivotal resources that sustain and enhance the company’s mission, enabling audiences to experience the transformative power of dance for generations to come.
