Choreographer Q&A with Tommie-Waheed Evans

How would you describe your inspiration for your work?

My desire to collide two worlds and break into an openness. Those two worlds being live gospel voice and classical minimalist. Plus, my want to create something new and different. And lastly, wanting to experiment with a bold (out there) idea and knowing I could do that with BalletX.

What does your music choice represent?

My history with the church and with gospel music. Plus a desire to be close to Marian Anderson’s story – she loved the songs we’re using with vocalist Tara Middleton.

In three words, how would you describe this work?

Moving, driving, and freeing.

What are the themes of your work?

Grace, rapture, and chaos.

What is your favorite thing to do in Philly?

EAT! El Vez, Del Frisco’s Grille, Parc, and Steak 48. Some of my favsssssss.

What’s the best work of dance you’ve seen in the last year?

From England with Love by Hofesh Shecter, performed by Nederlands Dans Theater.

If you were guaranteed to be successful in a different profession other than dance or choreography, what would you do?

Fashion industry – but corporation position not artistic/design.

What is your favorite band/artist?

Kanye West, Mary Mary, and Anita Baker

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Buy something high end – like a Chanel bag.
