As BalletX celebrates its 20th Anniversary Season, we’re highlighting members of our donor family who have made their mark on the company’s legacy.
We’re thrilled to feature Bob Bierman and Mary Kirson, passionate long-time supporters of the company and champions of BalletX’s Legacy Society.
How did you first discover BalletX?
We lived in Center City for almost 20 years. We’re both born-and-bred New Yorkers, and Mary’s job brought us to Philadelphia. We discovered BalletX about 14 years ago. We’re lifelong ballet lovers and had spent years seeing the best companies in the world in New York, so when we moved, we missed ballet. When we discovered Christine and BalletX, we fell in love and have been involved ever since.
What surprised you most about your first experience with BalletX?
Nothing other than the fact that we loved it. We enjoy all kinds of ballet, and having lived in New York, we were exposed to many companies. What stood out for both of us was that BalletX was a small, young, talented, and driven company. We got to know Christine and the dancers, and they became family to us.
Mary, you served on the BalletX Board for many years. What led you to want to deepen your involvement with the company?
I served on the Board of Directors for nine years. I loved the company and felt I could contribute to its growth, especially since we were involved near the beginning. I felt I could contribute to the growth of this company because of my knowledge about dance in general and ballet in specific areas. Once I did get on the board, I felt very welcomed and my input was taken.
If your friends or family were to ask you what BalletX means to you, what would be your response?
We think it’s a wonderful company. Christine is a marvel, and we truly think of the dancers as our honorary grandchildren. We love each and every one of them, and feel that they return that affection.
Do you have a favorite BalletX memory?
The dancers. They are our family, especially those we’ve known since the early days, like Francesca [Forcella] and Skyler [Lubin]. We were especially close to Chloe [Perkes] when the company had ten dancers. She became our first honorary grandchild, and we still stay in touch.
As for performances, Sunset, o639 Hours by Matthew Neenan stands out. It was one of BalletX’s first full-length ballets with original music and was absolutely wonderful.
You’ve always been passionate advocates for BalletX’s Legacy Society. Why do you feel it’s so important, and what personally inspired you to become members of the Legacy Society?
When I was on the board, we helped establish the Legacy Society. Many cultural organizations have one, and it’s a meaningful way to give while leaving a lasting impact. For people who want to support the arts but can’t give as much during their lifetime, including a gift in a will makes it more accessible.
And you chose BalletX because it feels like family?
Yes—and because of our long involvement, our belief in the company, and our support of the arts.
What would you tell other BalletX patrons who love the company but haven’t yet considered joining the Legacy Society?
What I would say is if you love this company and you want it to continue, consider including BalletX in your will. It will help them. It will allow them to stay alive.
