Rena Butler, choreographer and dancer with Hubbard Street Dance, will create a world premiere exploring parallels between the Underground Railroad and present-day oppression, set to an original score by Bronx composer Darryl Joseph. Her work is described as “a clever panorama of melting-pot street dance, hip-hop, get-down attitude, and pure funk” (Seeing Chicago Dance). Lead Sponsor: Arthur Kaplan & R. Duane Perry
Caili Quan, BalletX dancer and emerging choreographer, will debut a new ballet, inspired by her native Guam, and featuring music by singer and civil rights icon Harry Belafonte. She has created works on CelloPointe, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, St. Paul’s School, and Konverjdans. Her duet Fancy Me was featured at the 2018 Vail Dance Festival.
Penny Saunders, named “a remarkably fresh mind” by The New York Times, is quickly becoming an in-demand choreographer around the country. When BalletX premiered her 2018 work Rock-a-Bye, The Philadelphia Inquirer pronounced it “the reason to see the program.” Her 2020 premiere on the company will showcase original music by Michael Wall, composer and creator of soundFORMovement.com.
