Meet Houston Thomas

Choreographer

Born in Chicago, IL, Houston Thomas began his training at the Joffrey Ballet Outreach Program under the direction of Pierre Locket. He later attended the Joffrey Ballet’s Academy of Dance, the Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts), and the School of American Ballet. After completing his studies, Houston joined the Semperoper Ballett Dresden as an apprentice in 2013 and was promoted to second soloist in 2018. During his ten years with the Company, Houston has performed featured roles in works by William Forsythe, Sir Kenneth Macmillan, George Balanchine, Sir Frederik Ashton, Ohad Naharin, Hofesh Schecter, Alexander Ekman, Alexei Ratmansky, David Dawson, and others. In 2018, Dance Europe’s Critic Choice Award nominated Houston for “Best Male Performance” for his performance in Justin Peck’s Heatscape.

In 2018, Houston created his first work, Moonlit Variants, for the Semperoper Ballett Young Choreographers evening, and has since then created works for ABT Studio Co., Marcelo Gomes, NY Choreographic Institute, Hamptons Dance Project, Kanako Fujimoto, and Ballet San Antonio. In July of 2022, Houston premiered Follow the White Rabbit at the Young Emergent Choreographers Contest in Biarritz, France, winning a commission to create his work, Skywatcher, for the Opera National de Bordeaux. As of the 23/24 Season, Houston has decided to leave the Semperoper Ballett to focus on his choreography entirely.
